‘Duped by agent, 15 Indians pinned down in Ukraine-Russia war zone’

Two Indian nationals have told The Hindu that they are caught in the battlefield in Ukraine, where they are being forced to serve on the Russian side. The two recruits claimed there were at least 13 more Indians with them. All of them went to Moscow on student or visitor visa in the past six months. They were hired by an agent to work as construction workers but ended up in the war zone, the two men said on telephone from Selydove in Ukraine, where they are currently being lodged in a building. Russia claimed Selydove, a key town in the Donetsk region, in November 2024.

Election Commission holds CEO conference; reviews preparedness for rolling out nationwide SIR

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) held a conference of Chief Electoral Officers of all States and Union Territories to assess the preparedness for rolling out a nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. The Commission was planning on rolling out the SIR across the country at one time, with a single schedule; as of now, sources in the ECI said.

Manipur law to regulate issuance of certificates to SC, OBC communities gets Presidential assent

Nepal protests: Kathmandu airport resumes operations

Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, which had earlier been closed indefinitely, has now resumed operations. The Nepal Army has taken charge of security, with military personnel deployed across the capital. In a statement issued on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) morning, the Army said prohibitory orders are in place until 5 p.m., followed by a curfew from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday (September 11, 2025). The Army has stated that only essential service vehicles — ambulances, hearses, fire trucks, and vehicles carrying health professionals or security personnel — will be allowed on the roads during the period of prohibitory orders and curfew.

Just as the talks were going to reach a point where discussions about the main demands were going to start, the government has not called another meeting,” he said.

In the last few weeks, Mr. Navarro has made a series of critical remarks against India, especially for its continuing procurement of Russian crude oil. “The U.S. doesn’t need unfair trade with India. But India desperately needs access to U.S. markets and schools and intends to continue taking U.S. jobs,” he said. “India fuels Russia’s war chest. India is protectionist, with sky-high tariffs. The U.S. runs a massive trade deficit with India,” he said. Mr. Navarro also claimed that “India’s sky-high tariffs” are costing the U.S. its jobs.

Putin ‘testing the West’, Kyiv says after drones downed over Poland

Russia’s leader is escalating his war on Ukraine and testing the West, Kyiv said Wednesday (September 10, 2025), after drones violating Polish airspace were shot down. The statement came shortly after Poland scrambled aircraft alongside allies to shoot down “hostile objects” violating its airspace. “Russian drones flying into Poland during the massive attack on Ukraine show that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s sense of impunity keeps growing because he was not properly punished for his previous crimes,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga wrote on X. “Putin just keeps escalating, expanding his war, and testing the West,” Mr. Sybiga said. “The longer he faces no strength in response, the more aggressive he gets.”

200 arrested in France as protesters clash with police

Protesters blocked roads, set blazes and were met with volleys of police tear gas on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) in Paris and elsewhere in France, seeking to heap pressure on President Emmanuel Macron by attempting to give his new Prime Minister a baptism of fire. EU chief to push for sanctions on Israel Ministers, curb trade ties over Gaza

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) she would push to sanction “extremist” Israeli Ministers and curb trade ties over Gaza, as she warned famine could not be used as a “weapon of war”. Addressing the European Parliament, Ms. von der Leyen lamented that divisions among member States were holding back a European response and said the European Commission she leads “will do all that it can on its own”. The European Union’s executive will also propose sanctions on “extremist ministers” — whose actions and words “incite violence” — and “violent settlers”. It will also push for a partial suspension of an association agreement with Israel on trade-related matters.

Meta, TikTok win challenge against EU tech fees

Meta Platforms and TikTok on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) won their legal fight against a European Union supervisory fee imposed on them under landmark tech rules after Europe’s second-highest court faulted EU regulators on the way they calculated the levy. Meta and ByteDance’s TikTok sued the European Commission after they were hit with a supervisory fee of 0.05% of their annual worldwide net income to cover the EU executive’s cost of monitoring their compliance with the Digital Services Act.
