COP30 ends with roadmap to end deforestation, ‘transition away’ from fossil fuels

The 30th edition of the Conference of Parties (COP 30) in Belem, Brazil, drew to a close late Saturday (November 22, 2025) with COP President Andrei Lago giving a personal commitment to get countries to deliberate upon two ‘road maps’ to end deforestation as well as a path towards ending fossil fuel use by countries. Developing countries (including some petro states and India) were insistent on not including language that commits countries to a timeline on eliminating fossil fuel from their economies.

At G-20 summit, Modi promotes ‘integral humanism’, proposes new initiatives on health, skills

Global parameters of growth need to be reconsidered, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday (November 22, 2025), addressing the G-20 summit in Johannesburg, where he promoted the BJP’s political philosophy of “integral humanism” and proposed new initiatives on traditional knowledge, healthcare and skill development, among others. Leaders also adopted the G-20 declaration on Day 1 of the two-day summit, calling for strong measures to counter climate change. PM Modi also held talks with a number of leaders present, announcing a new Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership after a trilateral meeting with Australian PM Anthony Albanese and Canadian PM Mark Carney.

Shashi Tharoor praises Trump-Mamdani meet; BJP takes a jibe at Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Saturday (November 22, 2025) praised a friendly meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, stating that “this is how democracy should work” and that he was trying to do his part in the endeavour to “see more of this in India”. Responding to Mr. Tharoor’s post on X, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said: “Once again Shashi Tharoor reminds Congress to put India First not Parivar; to behave democratically and not like sore losers. But will Rahul Gandhi get the message? One more Fatwa loading against Shashi???”

Delhi blast: Court allows accused’s plea to meet lawyer at NIA headquarters

A Delhi court on Saturday (November 22, 2025) allowed the plea of Jasir Bilal Wani, alias Danish, an accused in the Red Fort blast case, to meet his lawyer at the headquarters of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is probing the case. The plea was allowed by principal district and sessions judge Anju Bajaj Chandna of the Patiala House courts. The development comes a day after the Delhi High Court refused to pass an order to allow the accused’s plea, saying he had failed to show any order by the trial court rejecting his prayer. The High Court had, however, granted liberty to the accused’s counsel to approach the trial court concerned on Saturday for adjudication of his plea in accordance with law.

CJI releases Collegium data on High Court judge appointments

Outgoing Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai placed in the public domain the names and social details of candidates approved by his Collegium, with women as a class outnumbering those from Other Backward Classes, Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes. Of a total 129 names considered for High Court appointments since May 14, when Chief Justice Gavai took over as top judge, the Collegium approved 93 names. The candidates hailed from both the lower judiciary and the Bar. Of these, women were 15 while OBC/BC candidates were 11, names from Scheduled Caste communities were 10, minorities 13 and those related to judges were five.

Madhya Pradesh HC grants interim stay on action against ancestral house of Al-Falah group chairperson

The Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has temporarily stayed the Mhow Cantonment Board’s notice to remove “unauthorised construction” at the ancestral house of Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui, the chancellor of Al-Falah University, which is at the centre of the Delhi blast probe. The court passed the interim order on Thursday (November 20, 2025) and disposed of the petition filed by a resident of the house who challenged the Board’s notice. Mr. Siddiqui was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on November 18 after the agency conducted searches against the group, linked persons and the Faridabad-based university.

Government to table Bill to hike FDI in insurance sector to 100% in Winter session of Parliament

The government proposes to introduce a Bill to raise foreign direct investment (FDI) in the insurance sector to 100% in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament. The Winter session of Parliament is slated to begin on December 1 and continue till December 19. The session will have 15 working days. According to a Lok Sabha bulletin, the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill 2025, which seeks to deepen penetration, accelerate growth and development of the insurance sector and enhance ease of doing business, is part of the 10 legislations listed for the upcoming session of the Parliament.

U.S. senators slam Trump’s Russia-Ukraine peace plan as rewarding aggression

U.S. senators critical of President Donald Trump’s approach to ending the Russia-Ukraine war said Saturday (November 22, 2025) that the peace plan he is pushing Kyiv to accept would only reward Moscow for its aggression and send a message to other leaders who have threatened their neighbours. The 28-point peace plan was crafted by the Trump administration and the Kremlin without Ukraine’s involvement. Mr. Trump says he wants Ukraine to accept the plan by late next week. The senators’ opposition to the plan follows criticism from other U.S. lawmakers, including some Republicans, none of whom have the power to block it. The senators, who spoke at an international security conference in Canada, included a Democrat, an Independent and a Republican who does not plan to seek reelection next year.

At least 24 killed as Israel launches strikes in Gaza ceasefire’s latest test

Israel’s military on Saturday (November 22, 2025) launched airstrikes against Hamas militants in Gaza in the latest test of the ceasefire that began on October 10, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said five senior Hamas members were killed. Health officials in Gaza reported at least 24 people killed and another 54 wounded, including children. The Israeli strikes came as international momentum was building on Gaza, with the UN Security Council on Monday (November 17, 2025) approving the U.S. blueprint to secure and govern the territory.

Aftershocks rock Bangladesh as quake death toll rises to 10

Two minor tremors hit Bangladesh on Saturday (November 22, 2025), a day after a powerful earthquake struck outside the capital Dhaka and killed at least 10 people. A 3.3-magnitude jolt was recorded in Narshingdi district, East of Dhaka, in the morning, followed by a 4.3-magnitude quake that struck the capital around 6:00 p.m. (12 p.m. GMT), according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. Updating earlier tolls from the 5.5-magnitude quake, disaster management official Ishtiaqe Ahmed told AFP that “the number of casualties has reached 10, while a few hundreds were injured”.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro taken into federal police custody

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was taken into federal police custody on Saturday (November 22, 2025), his lawyer told Reuters, ending months of house arrest as he appealed a Supreme Court conviction for attacks on Brazil’s democracy. Mr. Bolsonaro’s attorney Celso Vilardi did not give a reason for the detention. A person familiar with the matter said it was a preventative measure related to the terms of his house arrest.

Low pressure area formed in Bay of Bengal: IMD

A low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal, and it is likely to intensify into a depression around November 24, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday (November 22, 2025). “Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, a low-pressure area has formed near the Malacca Strait over the South Andaman Sea. It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea around November 24, 2025,” the IMD said in a special bulletin.
