Vice-Presidential election on September 9: Election Commission

“The election for the post of Vice-President will take place on September 9, 2025, and the counting will be on the same day,” the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Friday (August 1, 2025). Further, the polls will be notified on August 7, and the last date for filing nomination papers will be August 21.

Election Commission of India publishes draft electoral rolls for Bihar following SIR

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday (August 1, 2025) published the draft electoral rolls for Bihar, following the completion of the month-long Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls. No compiled list was made available, but voters can check their names on the ECI’s website.

Centre’s July 2025 GST revenue up 7.5% to ₹1.96 lakh crore

The Central government’s gross revenue from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) grew to ₹1.96 lakh crore in July, up 7.5% from the collections in July last year, and 6% higher than the collections in June 2025. Refunds under the system, however, surged by nearly 67% to ₹27,147 crore in July 2025 as compared to July last year. This meant that the government’s net GST revenue stood at ₹1.7 lakh crore, 1.7% higher than the net amount collected in July 2024.

U.S. deploying nuclear submarines in response to ‘provocative’ Russian comments: Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in “the appropriate regions” in response to statements from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. He did not specify what he meant by “nuclear submarines.” Submarines may be nuclear-powered, or armed with nuclear missiles. Mr. Trump and Mr. Medvedev, who is deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, have traded taunts in recent days.

Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan clinched his maiden National Award for his performance in the action blockbuster Jawan, while Rani Mukerji was adjudged the Best Actress for her efforts in the emotional drama Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway. Vikrant Massey shared the National Award for the Best Actor with Shah Rukh for his performance in the hit biopic 12th Fail. The winners of the 71st National Film Awards were declared. Honouring the best films and cinematic achievements of the year 2023, the awards were announced by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B).

MEA says Nimisha Priya's execution postponed, urges to avoid misinformation

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Indian national Nimisha Priya's execution in Yemen has been postponed, urging the public and media to stay away from unverified reports and misinformation circulating on the case. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the government is providing all possible assistance to Priya and her family, working closely with local authorities and governments to resolve the issue.

New Delhi rejects British Parliamentary report naming India among countries engaging in transnational repression

India categorically rejected as “baseless” a British parliamentary report that named it among countries engaged in “transnational repression” in the UK. The Ministry of External Affairs said the allegations stemmed from “unverified” and “dubious sources” predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals.The report titled “Transnational repression in the U.K.” was made public on July 30.

'Ignore baseless allegations': EC on Rahul Gandhi's 'vote theft' remarks

The Election Commission termed as "baseless" the allegations made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that the poll authority was indulging in "vote theft" for BJP and asked its officials to ignore such "irresponsible" remarks. Continuing his campaign against the Election Commission, Mr. Gandhi had claimed to have "open and shut" evidence of alleged poll irregularities by the poll authority and said that it would have no place to hide.

Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet arrives in Manila to bolster Indo-Pacific ties

Indian Navy’s Eastern Fleet arrived in Manila with INS Delhi, Shakti, and Kiltan, reaffirming maritime ties with the Philippines and commitment to the Indo-Pacific. Indian Navy informed that as part of the Navy’s ongoing operational deployment to South East Asia, Indian Naval Ships of the Eastern Fleet, commanded by Rear Admiral Susheel Menon, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF), arrived at Manila. The ships were welcomed by personnel of the Philippine Navy. The visit is a testimony to Indian Navy’s commitment to strengthening partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.

Trump ended conflicts including India-Pakistan, should get Nobel Peace Prize: White House Press Secretary

U.S. President Donald Trump should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has said, claiming that the U.S. President ended several conflicts around the world including the one between India and Pakistan. Since May 10, when Mr. Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire after a "long night" of talks mediated by Washington, he has repeated his claim on several occasions that he helped settle the tensions between the two countries.

Woman deported to Pakistan after Pahalgam attack to return home on visitor’s visa

The Centre has informed the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court that it has decided to grant a visitor’s visa to a 62-year-old housewife who was deported to Pakistan post-Pahalgam terror attack. The court said the particular case should not set a precedent in any manner. The petitioner, Rakshanda Rashid, a Pakistani citizen married to an Indian, had been living in Jammu for the past 38 years on a long-term visa (LTV), which was annually renewed. She had applied for a citizenship in 1996 but the request is yet to be processed.

NISAR mission enters critical 90-day commissioning phase

The historic NISAR mission, a landmark collaboration between NASA and ISRO, has entered its crucial 90-day commissioning phase, during which scientists will carry out rigorous checks, calibrations and orbital adjustments to prepare the satellite for full-scale earth observation. The critical phase follows the successful launch of the radar imaging satellite on July 30 aboard a GSLV-F16 rocket from Srikharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

Manufacturing sector growth hits 16-month high in July on expansion in output, sales

India's manufacturing sector growth strengthened in July to a 16-month high of 59.1, supported by faster increases in new orders and output amid favourable demand conditions, a monthly survey said on Friday (August 1, 2025). The seasonally adjusted HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index rose from 58.4 in June to 59.1 in July, signalling the strongest improvement in the health of the sector since March 2024. In the Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) parlance, a print above 50 means expansion, while a score below 50 denotes contraction.

Khalid Jamil named Indian men's football head coach

Khalid Jamil, who famously guided the unheralded Aizawl Football Club to the I-League title in 2017, was named head coach of the Indian national men's football team, becoming the first Indian in 13 years to occupy the coveted post. The 48-year-old Jamil, a former India international and currently in charge of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, was selected by the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) executive committee from a three-man shortlist.
