Nepal flood toll rises to 579; nearly 2,000 still missing

The death toll in the Nepal flash floods touched 579 on Friday (August 28, 2026), even as the search for nearly 2,000 missing people continued for the third day after the disaster struck. The Nepal Police said more than 4,500 people had been rescued. Of the 183 Indian tourists reported missing, 85 had been rescued while 98 remained unaccounted for, the Nepal Tourism Board said.

Fresh glacial lakes form at source of Nepal’s ice-rock avalanche

Two more glacial lakes have formed in Nepal, near the apparent source of the ice-rock avalanche that triggered flooding in Nepal’s Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river system on Wednesday (August 26, 2026). While the formation of the lakes is known, information on the potential water outflow is unavailable, said Krishna Vatsa, Member and Head of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

U.S. has entered deal with Venezuela to take control of 65 billion barrels of oil reserves, says Trump

President Donald Trump on Friday (August 28, 2026) said the U.S. has entered into an agreement with Venezuela to take control of 65 billion barrels of the South American country’s oil reserves. Mr. Trump, in a social media post, announced the agreement he said was negotiated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodriguez.

FSSAI proposes front-of-pack red pictorial warnings for foods high in fat, sugar, salt

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on Friday (August 28, 2026) submitted to the Supreme Court a proposal to provide information relating to added sugar, fat and salt in pictorial form on the front-of-pack (FOP) of food products, in line with international regulations.

Syria’s President appoints Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi as his adviser

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa appointed Kurdish leader Mazloum Abdi as a Presidential adviser, state media said on Friday (August 28, 2026), days after Abdi announced the dissolution of his Kurdish forces under an integration deal with Damascus. The Education Ministry also published a decision authorising Kurdish-language instruction in public and private schools.

India, U.S. sign agreement for procurement of Javelin anti-tank missile system

India has signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) with the United States for the procurement of the Javelin anti-tank guided missile system through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route, marking a significant step in defence cooperation between the two countries.

The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi on Friday (August 28, 2026) welcomed the signing, saying the agreement demonstrated the growing depth of the U.S.-India Major Defence Partnership and opened the way for greater cooperation between the two countries and its defence industries.

India, Canada reiterate commitment to complete trade deal by end of 2026

Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Canadian Minister of Finance and National Revenue François-Philippe Champagne on Friday (August 28, 2026) issued a joint statement that reiterated the two countries’ commitment to conclude the India-Canada trade deal by the end of 2026.

The joint statement also said that India had expressed its readiness to begin negotiations on a Bilateral Investment Treaty “at the earliest”. The statement followed the conclusion of the inaugural India-Canada Finance Ministers’ Economic and Financial Dialogue in Toronto.

Bangladesh govt. positively weighs joining Mecca Pact; Opposition throws in support

Bangladesh will give positive consideration to joining the Mecca Pact, the trilateral defence agreement signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan, should its members propose bringing Dhaka into the framework, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman told Parliament on Thursday (August 27, 2026). The BNP-led government’s such consideration has also drawn support from the country’s main Opposition parties, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP).  Responding to a supplementary question from independent Member of Parliament Rumin Farhana during the third session of the 13th Parliament, Mr. Rahman said Bangladesh’s accession to the pact was not currently under discussion and would depend on the intentions of the agreement’s existing signatories.

HDFC Bank plans to move NCLAT against NCLT order in Subhash Chandra case

HDFC Bank, one of the creditors in the Zee TV founder Subhash Chandra personal guarantee case, said it was exploring filing an appeal at the NCLAT, against the recent NCLT order that had accepted Mr. Chandra’s repayment offer of ₹6.5 crore to clear personal guarantee liabilities amounting to creditors’ claims of ₹22,006 crore. The bank said it had opposed and voted against this resolution, which was approved by the majority of creditors.

IGL hikes CNG prices by ₹3.89 per kg as LNG prices stay elevated

North India’s largest city-gas distributor Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) informed late on Friday (August 28, 2026) that it would be increasing the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) across all its retail stations by ₹3.89 per kg as international prices of the input gas, that is, LNG, continues to remain elevated amid the re-escalation of the conflict in West Asia, effective Saturday (August 29, 2026).
