‘Navi’ Pillay, South African jurist of Tamil descent, wins 2026 Peace Nobel
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to Navanethem “Navi” Pillay for her efforts to promote peace and international law, the Nobel Peace Prize Committee said. In awarding this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to remind the world that the rule of law — national and international — underpins the system we have set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently. Peace requires justice, the Committee said.
Israel to honour Capt. Smit Machchhar with civilian heroism award
Indian Captain Smit Machchhar, who fought off an attack from his co-pilot inside the cockpit of a flydubai plane, will receive Israel’s highest bravery award for civilians, President Isaac Herzog has said. President Herzog on Thursday (October 8, 2026) presented the Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism to six individuals who were on board the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026.
Supreme Court backs right to association, peaceful protest; seeks permission details of Oct 10 protests
The Supreme Court of India on Friday (October 9, 2026) said the right to association and protest peacefully is a fundamental right of every citizen while reacting to a mention by senior lawyers of the Apex Court about the unprecedented “shutting down” of the National Capital a day ahead of the CJP protests for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on October 10. Making an impromptu oral mention before a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, a battery of lawyers, led by senior advocates Kapil Sibal and A.M. Singhvi, said the capital has been “heavily barricaded”, making free movement virtually impossible.
U.P. Cabinet approves to rename Jewar airport after PM Modi
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Friday (October 9, 2026) approved a proposal to rename the Noida International Airport at Jewar as ‘Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar’, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said. The U.P. CM praised the Prime Minister for helping U.P. to emerge as a model of world-class infrastructure. “Thanks to the visionary thinking of the Honourable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji, Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a new model of world-class infrastructure and connectivity.”
PM Carney says Canadians will decide their future after Elon Musk expresses support for separatism
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Thursday (October 8, 2026) that Canada’s future will be decided by Canadians, pushing back on Elon Musk’s call for Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to separate from Canada. “The future of Canada will be decided by Canadians and the priorities of Canadians, the priorities of the people of Quebec,” PM Carney said when asked about Mr. Musk’s comments.
Eight BJP and two SP candidates from UP elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha
All 10 Rajya Sabha candidates from Uttar Pradesh -- eight from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and two from the Samajwadi Party (SP) -- were declared elected unopposed, an official said. “All the 10 candidates who were in the fray for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections -- eight from the BJP and two from the SP -- have been declared elected unopposed,” Returning Officer for the Rajya Sabha polls Ajit Verma told PTI.
CJP protest: Trains cut, Internet down, Delhi turns into a fortress
The Delhi Police denied permission to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to hold its proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday (October 10), citing alleged violations of conditions agreed upon for an earlier demonstration, even as authorities rolled out an extensive security plan across the national capital. Repeal recent Assembly polls, INDIA bloc urges President
The Opposition INDIA bloc urged President Droupadi Murmu to “repeal” all Assembly elections held over the last two years, saying they have “incontrovertible proof” of “vote chori” (theft). Ministry of Home Affairs directs States to prevent CJP supporters from mobilising towards Delhi
The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked all States and Union Territories to work with the Delhi Police and take preventive steps to stop protesters from mobilising towards the national capital. In a communication to Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police (DGPs), Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan flagged the “grave law and order and public order implications” of the proposed protest.

As part of the preventive measures, police in several States have detained potential participants, questioned supporters about their plans and visited their homes ahead of the proposed demonstration. The effort to intercept protesters at their starting points mirrors the Delhi Police’s district-wise strategy to prevent people from reaching central Delhi. With the protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and student organisations, the police are tracking potential participants through social media activity, intelligence inputs and coordination with State agencies, sources said.
Government slams Vance’s remarks on Indian IT professionals as ‘deeply offensive’
The Ministry of External Affairs slammed as “unwarranted” and “deeply offensive” U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s comments in which he called foreign workers, including Indian IT professionals, “indentured servants”. Hitting out at the U.S. government for its decision to suspend “labour certifications” from several Indian technology firms based in America, the Ministry said the steps would not “advance the shared ambitions of both countries”, indicating further trouble in the already difficult economic relationship between the two countries.
No surprises in byelection results in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as voters favour the ruling party candidates
The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which came to power in Tamil Nadu exactly five months ago, passed its first electoral test in Tamil Nadu, bagging the Madurantakam and Dharapuram (Reserved) Assembly constituencies. In Puducherry, the ruling All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) retained Thattanchavady. Both in Madurantakam and Dharapuram, TVK nominees Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama were elected with comfortable margins of 20,040 votes and 9,471 votes respectively. They won from these constituencies in April-May 2026 as AIADMK candidates and then defected to the ruling party after resigning as MLAs.
West Bengal SIR: Supreme Court mulls having tribunals first hear deleted voters seeking re-inclusion
The Supreme Court orally suggested that lakhs of voters seeking inclusion in the West Bengal electoral roll deserved to be heard first, while appeals for exclusion pending before the Appellate Tribunals could be heard last. An affidavit filed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in the Supreme Court in September 2026 revealed that more than 22 lakh voters purged from the electoral roll during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, on grounds such as “logical discrepancies,” had filed appeals challenging their exclusion.
Suspension of U.S. green card programme will not impact workforce strategy: TCS
Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) said that it would comply with any directive from the U.S. government to continue its business in the country, stating that the latest suspension of the Permanent Labor Certification Program (PERM) would not impact its workforce strategy or customer engagements. The statement comes after the U.S. suspended several IT firms, including Tata, from the PERM programme, which allows companies to apply for green cards for H-1B visa workers.
Sri Lanka appeals to Saudi Arabia to overturn migrant worker’s death penalty
Sri Lanka is preparing to petition Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court to overturn a recent Court of Appeal ruling sentencing a migrant worker to death. “We are working on an appeal and are hoping to file it today or tomorrow at the Supreme Court,” President’s Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma told The Hindu from Riyadh. He is part of a team of senior lawyers and officials from the public prosecutor’s office sent by the Sri Lankan government to Saudi Arabia.
