Three-language scheme: Centre raises ‘issue’ in SC over treating English as ‘native’, assures quick action on Class 6 reprieve
The Union government said it “has an issue” with treating English as an indigenous language, but promised the Supreme Court on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) to move quickly with consultations to grant current Class 6 students a one-time reprieve from a mandatory third-language Board exam. Appearing before a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was standing in for Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, who is representing the Union government and the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) Board in the case, said a meeting would be arranged “today or tomorrow” with the officials concerned in the presence of Ms. Bhati for a decision on the issue of reprieve for Class 6 students.
Emergency treatment to EWS patients: Supreme Court slams Yatharth hospital for not responding to contempt notice
The Supreme Court on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) rapped Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital for not responding to a contempt notice issued by it over preparation of a standard operating procedure (SOP) for providing emergency medical care to economically weaker section (EWS) patients. A Bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Shree Chandrashekhar sought reply from the hospital in two weeks.
Supreme Court asks Road Ministry to examine poor implementation of seat belt, child safety rules
The Supreme Court on Wednesday (September 9, 2026) said that the high occurrence of deaths and life-altering injuries in road accidents due to deliberate negligence in using seat belts, observing child safety measures and the absence of first aid kits is highly deplorable. A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant asked the Union Road Ministry to consider a petition filed by Jothydev Kesavadev, a doctor and researcher represented by advocate Wills Mathews, who said fatalities could be effectively prevented by simple but largely ignored and weakly enforced measures like adherence to seat belts, child seats and rear seat belts required under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Why should BCCI, State bodies be not governed by National Sports Governance Act, asks Supreme Court
The Supreme Court has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and all the State cricket associations why they should not be governed by the National Sports Governance Act, 2025. A Bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana observed this on Tuesday (September 8, 2026) while hearing the applications filed by some cricket bodies in the BCCI matter. The Bench also asked the advocates appearing for the BCCI and State cricket associations to take instructions on why the terms and conditions of service of their office bearers be not governed by the 2025 Act which is now in force.
