French PM ousted in parliament confidence vote

France’s parliament on Monday (September 8, 2025) ousted the government of Prime Minister Francois Bayrou after just nine months in office, leaving President Emmanuel Macron scrambling to find a successor and plunging the country into a new political crisis.

Nepal protests: At least 14 killed, Army deployed to control situation

At least 14 people have been reported killed as police fired at protesters, mostly Nepal’s tech-savvy Generation Z, on Monday (September 8, 2025) who took over the streets of Kathmandu and other major cities to protest against corruption and the government’s recent ban on social media platforms. As the protest escalated, demonstrators marched towards Nepal’s federal parliament building in New Baneshwor. Security forces reinforced barricades, but protesters broke through the police cordon and entered the parliament premises, chanting slogans against leaders, including Prime Minister K.P. Sharma ‘Oli’, and demanding he “leave the country.”

Bihar SIR hearing | Aadhaar should be treated as valid proof for SIR exercise, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to include Aadhaar as a valid proof for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. The top court, however, made it clear that Aadhaar was not a proof of citizenship and the ECI is entitled to verify if the documents are genuine. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi passed the interim order while considering the response of political parties like the Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD), AIMIM and other petitioners on the poll panel’s note where it has submitted that 99.5% of the 7.24 crore electors in the draft electoral roll had filed their eligibility documents in the SIR exercise.

BJD MPs to abstain from voting in vice-presidential elections

Odisha’s principal Opposition party, Biju Janata Dal (BJD), on Monday (September 8, 2025) announced that its MPs will abstain from voting in the vice-presidential elections. The party, headed by former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, said it took the decision as part of its policy of “maintaining an equal distance” from both the BJP-led NDA and Congress-led INDIA bloc at the national level.

Brain-eating amoeba: Kerala reports fifth amoebic meningoencephalitis death in a month

Kerala reported the fifth death due to amoebic meningoencephalitis in a month as a Malappuram native undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, died on Monday (September 8, 2025). According to sources, Sobhana, 56, from Thiruvali near Wandoor in Malappuram district, was admitted to the hospital last week. She had been in a critical condition since then.

India, Israel ink bilateral investment treaty

The Finance Ministry on Monday (September 8, 2025) said India and Israel have inked a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) which would help promote investments between the two countries. “The Government of India and the Government of the State of Israel sign Bilateral Investment Agreement # BIT in New Delhi, today,” the Finance Ministry said in a post on X. The pact was inked by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and her Israeli counterpart Bezalel Smotrich.

India, Qatar likely to finalise terms of reference for FTA in early-October

India is likely to finalise terms of reference for a free trade agreement (FTA) with Qatar in the first week of October, said a government source on Monday (September 8, 2025). The source added that Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal may visit the Gulf country to finalise the same on October 6. The possibility of a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) with Doha was first announced this February during the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani’s visit to India. The two sides sought to double their bilateral trade by 2030.

AAP MLA Mehraj Malik detained under PSA in J&K’s Doda

Jammu and Kashmir AAP chief and MLA Mehraj Malik was on Monday (September 8, 2025) detained under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) in Doda district, officials said. This is the first time that a sitting MLA has been detained under the PSA, an administrative law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases.

Tribal outfit claims rats bit 4 fingers of newborn girl, accuses Indore hospital of ‘cover-up’

Days after a newborn girl died at the government-run Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH) in Indore, a tribal outfit on Monday (September 8, 2025) claimed rats had gnawed her four fingers, and accused the medical facility’s administration of lying and misleading everyone. The Jai Adivasi Yuva Shakti (JAYS), a tribal organisation, has demanded suspension of the hospital superintendent and other senior officials, along with registration of a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Prohibitory orders imposed in Maddur town in Mandya following stone-pelting during Ganesha procession

Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Maddur town after a stone pelting incident was reported during Ganesha idol immersion procession on Sunday (September 7) night. At least eight persons, who suffered injuries due to stone pelting, have been discharged from the hospital after medical treatment. Superintendent of Mandya district police Mallikarjun Baladandi told reporters on Monday (September 8) that the police had taken a total of 21 persons into custody. About five to six more persons, who were reportedly involved in the trouble, had been identified and efforts were on to arrest them as well, he said.

Senior journalist Sankarshan Thakur passes away

Sankarshan Thakur, Editor of The Telegraph, passed away on Monday (September 8, 2025) in a Gurgaon hospital. Mr. Thakur, 63, was ailing for sometime and had undergone a surgery recently. Known for his incisive political analysis and ground reporting, Mr. Thakur was considered one of the finest writers in contemporary journalism.

 

Supreme Court refuses to intervene in plea challenging the appointment of first woman V-C for Aligarh Muslim University

The Supreme Court on Monday (September 8, 2025) refused to intervene in a petition challenging the appointment of Professor Naima Khatoon as the first woman Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). A Bench headed by Justice J.K. Maheshwari said it was not inclined to entertain the plea, which questioned the participation of Professor Khatoon’s husband, Professor Mohd. Gulrez, who was officiating as Vice-Chancellor at the time, in the Executive Council meeting which suggested her name for the approval of the Visitor.

Elgar Parishad case: Supreme Court to hear bail plea of Mahesh Raut on September 15

The Supreme Court on Monday (September 8, 2025) decided to hear on September 15 the bail plea of Elgar Parishad-Bhima Koregaon case accused Mahesh Raut, who has sought release on medical grounds citing deteriorating health. Appearing before a Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma, Mr. Raut’s counsel submitted that the activist was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and required specialised treatment that was not available either in prison or at Mumbai’s JJ Hospital, where he had been examined.

Nitish Katara murder case: Supreme Court refuses to extend interim bail of Vikas Yadav

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to extend the interim bail of Vikas Yadav, who is serving a 25-year jail term in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case. A Bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Satish Chandra Sharma asked Yadav’s lawyer to move the Delhi High Court for extension or grant of fresh interim bail in the case. The apex court was hearing an appeal filed by Yadav against an August 22 order of the Delhi High Court, which had refused to extend his interim bail.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy favours tough tariffs on trades with Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday (September 8, 2025) supported the imposition of tariffs on countries maintaining economic ties with Russia. In a series of posts on X, Mr. Zelenskyy said it is important that there is a broad response from Ukraine’s partners to this strike. “Clearly, Russia is trying to inflict pain on Ukraine with even more brazen attacks. This is a clear sign that Russian President Vladimir Putin is testing the world,” he said.

Haryana youth shot dead in U.S. after he tried to stop man from urinating outside store, says family

A 26-year-old man from a village in Haryana’s Jind district was shot dead in California in the U.S. allegedly by a local when he tried to stop him from urinating on the road outside the store where he worked, according to his family. The head of Barah Kalan village in Jind, Suresh Kumar Gautam, said on Monday (September 8, 2025) that the youth, Kapil, from his village, who had gone to the US nearly three years ago, was murdered on Saturday (September 6, 2025).

Government working on comprehensive package to support exporters hit by U.S. tariffs: Nirmala Sitharaman

“The Union Government is working on a comprehensive package to support exporters impacted by a steep 50% tariff imposed by the U.S.,” Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said, asserting a multi-departmental engagement is under way to assess the impact on Indian shipments. In an interview with PTI, Ms. Sitharaman said various industries are sharing the impact with the departments concerned or Ministries as the second part (25%) of the tariff kicked in from August 27, 2025.

Asia Cup 2025: 17th edition of continental event gets underway on September 9

The previous event in 2023, won by India, was held in the 50-over format ahead of the ODI World Cup that year.
