PM Modi, President Xi express commitment to fair, reasonable resolution of boundary issue

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed to work towards a “fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable” resolution of the festering boundary issue and pledged to work towards stabilising global trade. In their wide-ranging talks on the margins of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Mr. Modi and Mr. Xi agreed that the two countries are development partners and not rivals, noting that differences between the two sides should not turn into disputes.

In what could be a shift in New Delhi’s recent positions on the issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Chinese President Xi Jinping that both countries are “victims” of terrorism and should work together to combat the “scourge” of cross-border terrorism. Responding to a number of questions from the media about whether Mr. Modi had raised the issue of terrorism and, in particular, the Pahalgam terror attacks that India has blamed Pakistan for, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the issue was discussed during Sunday’s (August 31, 2025) bilateral meeting.

Election Commission of India targets new voter cards for all Bihar voters post SIR

The Election Commission of India (ECI) plans to issue new voter identity cards to all electors of Bihar after the completion of the ongoing special intensive revision of electoral rolls in the State, officials said. They added that a final call on when the new cards will be issued is yet to be taken by the poll authority. Officials said while the plan is to issue every Bihar voter with a new voter card, a final call on when and how the exercise will be carried out is yet to be taken.

More than 33,000 people apply for re-inclusion in Bihar electoral rolls

With just a day left for filing claims and objections in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Sunday (August 31, 2025) that 33,326 people have applied for re-inclusion in the voter list. The draft electoral rolls published on August 1 included 7.24 crore people, 65 lakh fewer names from the voter list published before the SIR exercise began.

Centre deputes teams to assess damage in disaster-hit States

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has constituted Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) to assess damage in States affected by unprecedented rainfall, floods and other disasters over the past few days. An IMCT each has been formed for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to assess the impact of heavy rainfall, flash floods, cloudbursts and landslides, the Ministry said in a statement.

‘Mini-cloudbursts’ are on the rise, says IMD chief

There is no “increasing trend” in ‘cloudbursts’ over India in recent years and they remain “impossible” to forecast. However, there has been an increase in ‘mini cloudbursts’, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director-General, India Meteorological Department (IMD), said at a press briefing on Sunday (August 31, 2025). Rainfall in September — the last official monsoon month — is like in previous months, expected to be ‘above normal’, or 9% more than the usual average of 16.7 cm. Except for the northeastern States and parts of “extreme” southern India, the rest of the country is expected to receive above-normal monsoon.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels detain at least 11 U.N. staff

The United Nations said Yemen’s Houthis detained at least 11 workers on Sunday (August 31, 2025) in raids on U.N. premises, after rebel authorities made numerous arrests following Israel’s killing of their Prime Minister. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for their “immediate and unconditional release”, confirming that 11 U.N. personnel had been subjected to “arbitrary detentions.. by the Houthi de facto authorities”. U.N. envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg said the detentions, carried out in Sanaa and Hodeida, came after “the forced entry into U.N. premises and seizure of U.N. property”.

India will have the most number of men’s javelin throwers among competing countries in next month’s World Championships in Tokyo, with Neeraj Chopra leading the pack of four, in a remarkable reflection of the ‘revolution’ brought by the two-time Olympic medallist’s exploits at the global stage. Besides Chopra, three other rising javelin throwers — Sachin Yadav, Yashvir Singh and Rohit Yadav — were also picked for the men’s javelin event as India named a 19-member team for the September 13-21 showpiece.

Israel Army says it has struck Hezbollah site in south Lebanon

The Israeli Army said it carried out a strike on a site run by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on Sunday. “A short while ago, the IDF [Army] struck military infrastructure, including underground infrastructure, at a Hezbollah site in which military activity was identified, in the area of the Beaufort Ridge in southern Lebanon,” the military said in a statement.

SC to hear on September 1 plea over sale of 20% ethanol blended petrol

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a plea which has challenged the nationwide rollout of 20% Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP-20), alleging that millions of motorists have been forced to use fuel not designed for their vehicles. The public interest litigation (PIL) is listed for hearing before a bench headed by Chief Justice B. R. Gavai on September 1.

Air India Indore-bound flight returns to Delhi after 'fire indication'

An Indore-bound Air India flight returned to the city shortly after take off as the pilot received a "fire indication" in the right engine of the aircraft, the airline said. The aircraft has been grounded for inspection, and passengers are being transferred to an alternative aircraft which will operate the flight to Indore shortly, Air India said.
