PM Modi to visit Cyprus, Croatia during his trip to Canada
Reiterating India’s traditional foreign policy goals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus and Croatia, official sources said in New Delhi on Monday (June 9, 2025). Mr. Modi will visit Cyprus on his way to Canada to participate in the G-7 summit (June 15-17), and on the way back, he will pay a visit to Croatia, which will be the first-ever Prime Minister-level visit from the Indian side since the formation of Croatia in 1991 after the dissolution of former Yugoslavia.
Indian man facing difficulties at Newark airport, Indian Consulate in touch with authorities
The Consulate General of India here on Monday (June 9, 2025) said it is in touch with local authorities after a video surfaced online showing a young Indian man being handcuffed and allegedly deported. “We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard,” the Indian Consulate said in a post on X.
Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla’s mission to International Space Station postponed once again
The launch of Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s mission to the International Space Station (ISS) has once again been postponed. The Axiom-4 Mission to the ISS, which was scheduled on June 10 at 8.22 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) from Launch Complex 39A at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, has been postponed to June 11 due to weather conditions.
All-party parliamentary delegation led by Shashi Tharoor wraps up U.S. visit
A multi-party parliamentary delegation wrapped up its visit to the U.S. after meeting with Vice President J.D. Vance and Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau among political and diplomatic leaders, to drive home India’s strong resolve to combat terrorism emanating from Pakistan. The delegation, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, was on the last leg of a multi-nation tour to brief key interlocutors about Operation Sindoor that India launched in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The Indian team met Vice President Vance, Mr. Landau, House Foreign Affairs Committee leadership, India Caucus leadership and Senate Foreign Relations Committee leaders. It also held meetings and interactions with a host of U.S. Congressmen, think tanks, policy experts, and media, as well as members of the Indian-American community.
Trump’s new travel ban takes effect amid escalating tension over immigration enforcement
U.S. President Donald Trump’s new ban on travel to the U.S. by citizens from 12 mainly African and Middle Eastern countries took effect on Monday (June 9, 2025). The new proclamation, which Mr. Trump signed on Wednesday, also imposes new travel restrictions on people from seven additional countries who are outside the U.S. and don’t have a valid visa. The new ban does not revoke visas previously issued to people from countries on the list, which include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. The new visa restrictions apply to people from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

Bangladesh’s former president Abdul Hamid, who served two terms during deposed premier Sheikh Hasina’s regime, returned to the country on Monday (June 9, 2025) after receiving medical treatment abroad. The 81-year-old ex-president returned from Thailand a month after his “secret departure” sparked protests in Bangladesh for being allowed to leave despite being accused in a murder case. “He landed here in predawn hours on a Thai Airways flight. He left the airport on completion of required immigration formalities that took nearly an hour and a half,” an official of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) told reporters.
California plans to file lawsuit against Trump over National Guard deployment to protests
California officials planned to file a lawsuit Monday (June 9, 2025) against President Donald Trump in response to the administration’s extraordinary deployment of the National Guard to confront immigration protesters who took to the streets in Los Angeles. Attorney General Rob Bonta said the deployment “trampled” the state’s sovereignty. He planned to seek a court order declaring that Mr Trump’s use of the Guard was unlawful and ask for a restraining order to halt the deployment.
U.S., China begin key trade talks in London
China and the United States began a new round of trade talks in London on Monday (June 9, 2025), Beijing’s state media reported, as the world’s two biggest economies seek to shore up a shaky truce after bruising tit-for-tat tariffs. The two sides are meeting in the historic Lancaster House, run by the U.K. Foreign Office, following a first round of talks in Geneva last month.

After four persons died and six others were injured when they fell from a local train in Mumbai due to overcrowding in peak hours, the Railway Board has said that new, non-AC trains would be designed and manufactured with automatic door closure facility to prevent accidents. The deadline for introducing the first prototype of such a non-AC train with door closure facility in the Mumbai Suburban Railway network has been fixed as January 2026.

Singapore-flagged cargo ship catches fire off Beypore coast in Kerala; rescue mission underway
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Navy have launched a joint rescue operation to save the lives of about 22 crew members from a cargo vessel that caught fire nearly 40 nautical miles off the Beypore coast early on Monday (June 9, 2025) morning. Coast guard sources said the feeder vessel was on the way to Mumbai from Colombo, Sri Lanka, with over 650 containers. They said the reasons behind the fire were yet to be ascertained. Disaster management sources said about 20 containers reportedly fell into the sea from the container ship, identified as under the flag of Singapore. They said arrangements were in place in Kannur, Kozhikode and Kochi to extend emergency medical care to the injured crew after the rescue operation.
