Monsoon Session ends in near washout as disruptions stall Parliament

The Monsoon Session of Parliament that concluded on Thursday (August 13, 2026) saw multiple lows in terms of productivity. Twelve Bills were passed, with detailed debate taking place on only one — the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, also known as the anti-paper leak legislation. Only two questions were answered orally in the Lok Sabha and 16 in the Rajya Sabha during the entire session. However, the Opposition managed to maintain a united front, pushing back strongly against several legislations, including the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill (FCRA), 2026, which was referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

Sumit Sarkar, eminent scholar of modern Indian history, dies at 87

Eminent Marxist historian and scholar of modern Indian history, Sumit Sarkar, died at a private hospital in New Delhi on Thursday (August 13, 2026). He was 87. He spent several years teaching History at the University of Delhi, and was a Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford. He had also been a visiting professor at several prestigious universities in the United States and Europe.

Supreme Court slams FSSAI for not introducing front-of-pack warning labels on packaged food products

The Supreme Court on Thursday (August 13, 2026) criticised the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the country’s food regulator, for not introducing front-of-pack warning labels on packaged food products indicating sugar, salt and saturated fat levels. A Bench headed by Justice J.B. Pardiwala asked the FSSAI whether it did not want children to grow up healthy. The hearing was based on a petition filed by the Kerala-based NGO, 3S and Our Health Society, seeking directions from the Centre to introduce front-of-pack warning labels.

Gautam Rangarajan, former Indian diplomat’s son and BBC exec appointed U.K. PM’s Adviser

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has appointed Gautam Rangarajan, the son of a former senior Indian diplomat, as an Expert Adviser on Structure and Process, as per a Downing Street announcement made earlier this week. “Gautam brings significant experience in corporate strategy and transformation,” the statement said. Mr. Burnham, who was earlier the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has plans for a major restructuring of the the U.K. Government. He has vowed to take political power out of London and its bureaucratic heart — Whitehall — and distribute it across the regions. The new Prime Minister has also launched a hub-office, called ‘ No.10 North’ in Manchester.

Nepal’s former PM Deuba returns after over five months abroad for treatment

Former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba returned to Nepal on Thursday (August 13, 2026) after spending more than five months abroad for medical treatment following injuries sustained during the Gen Z protests last year. Mr. Deuba and his wife, former Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, were seriously injured during violent protests on September 9, 2025, when anti-government demonstrations led by the Gen Z movement swept across Nepal and resulted in the fall of the K.P. Sharma Oli government.

Instagram changes its wordmark logo after over a decade

The Supreme Court on Thursday (August 13, 2026) agreed to confront the Centre, Delhi Police Commissioner with questions raised by Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament A.A. Rahim. He moved the Supreme Court on the deployment of facial recognition technology and allied mass-surveillance measures against students and individuals who participated in the Cockroach Janta Party-linked protests over the NEET-UG exam paper leaks.
A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant addressed senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy and advocate Subhash Chandran that Mr. Rahim’s petition would be tagged with the main NEET-UG protest petitions, which have questioned the police crackdown on students and the use of pellet guns.

Supreme Court asks government to consider plea flagging ‘high-risk’ AI in public welfare

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday (August 13, 2026) asked the Union Government to consider a petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer flagging the lack of a comprehensive statutory regime on the government’s use of “high-risk” Artificial Intelligence technology in areas affecting public access to food, health benefits, wages, pension, scholarship and grant of welfare subsidies.

Six workers dead, 14 injured as water, debris enter tunnel in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli

At least six people died and 14 others sustained injuries on Thursday (August 13, 2026) after water and debris entered a tunnel under construction at a hydroelectric project site in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, officials said. According to preliminary information shared by the officials, 22 workers were trapped inside the tunnel. Twenty people have been brought out of the tunnel. Of them, six were declared dead, while 14 others have sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. Information about the remaining two workers was not immediately available.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, which controls 27.9% holdings in Tata Sons, has accepted the resignation of Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran and initiated process to search for his successor.

“On 12th August 2026, our nominee directors received an email from Mr. N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons Private Limited, wherein he conveyed his decision to not offer himself for re-appointment as Chairman upon the expiry of his current tenure on 20th February 2027,” Tata Trusts said in a statement.

The move comes days after Air India flight AI 2379 Phuket- Delhi encountered a momentary loss of altitude and a series of technical snags that also resulted in 24 aboard getting injured. The pilot-in-command subsequently tested positive for marijuana during a screening, according to sources familiar with the matter. The decision to conduct comprehensive screening of Air India’s pilots was conveyed to the airline’s cockpit crew through an email.
