Assam sees 84.42% polling; voter turnout 75% in Kerala, 86.92% in Puducherry
Kerala crossed the voter turnout of 75% by 5 p.m., after polling continued in 140 Assembly constituencies on Thursday. Those present at the polling stations at 6 p.m. were given tokens and would be allowed to vote. Polling in all 126 Assembly constituencies of Assam ends with estimated 84.42% voter turnout. The crucial elections will decide whether the ruling LDF will get a straight third term, or if the UDF makes a comeback, or if BJP springs a surprise in an otherwise bipolar battle. According to initial estimates, the polling percentage has crossed 86% in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Pakistan set to host high-stakes U.S.-Iran talks today
Pakistan is set to host high-stakes in-person talks between the United States and Iran on Friday (April 10, 2026), aiming to consolidate a fragile ceasefire and avert further escalation in West Asia. The U.S. and Iran agreed to a two-week conditional ceasefire on Wednesday, followed by a face-to-face meeting in Islamabad to settle the differences and convert the ongoing truce into a lasting peace.
Iran’s Supreme Leader says does not seek war in written message
Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei in his latest written message said that the Islamic republic does not want war with the United States and Israel, but would protect its rights as a nation, state television reported Thursday (April 9, 2026). “We did not seek war and we do not want it,” he said in the message read out on state TV, coinciding with 40 days since his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed on February 28, the first day of the war.
Trump warns Iran against tolls for Hormuz shipping
US President Donald Trump on Thursday warned Iran against imposing a toll for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, after Tehran agreed to reopen the crucial route as part of a two-week ceasefire. “There are reports that Iran is charging fees to tankers going through the Hormuz Strait -- They better not be and, if they are, they better stop now!” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
Putin declares ceasefire in Ukraine for Orthodox Easter
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday (April 9, 2026) declared a 32-hour ceasefire in Ukraine over the Orthodox Easter weekend, following an earlier call from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a pause in some of the hostilities to observe the holiday.

Two India-bound ships among a few transiting Hormuz Strait on Day 2 of ceasefire
On Day 2 of the ceasefire in Iran, ship traffic across the Strait of Hormuz which had slowly increased to 10% of pre-war levels before the ceasefire, dwindled to almost zero. With direct talks between Iran and the U.S. scheduled to begin soon in Pakistan, shippers await clarity on the protocols for the transit agreed to by all the stakeholders. Ship tracker websites show that Marivex, an oil tanker with a cargo capacity of 12,800 tonnes, is carrying oil from Bandar Abbas in Iran to New Mangalore Port. MSG, an oil tanker of 7,000 tonnes cargo capacity, is carrying cargo from UAE to India. Both transited the strait late on April 9, 2026.
Q4 PAT to be under pressure on Iran-U.S. war:Analysts
Net profit for fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 is expected to slow down on a year-on year basis due to the price effects of Iran-U.S. war, brokerages said. PAT of Nifty 50 companies, which is representative of the Indian corporates, is expected to grow at a rate between 0.6% to 6% for the recently concluded quarter going by the reports.
