The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Thursday (September 24, 2026) demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar for “undermining” voter rights, and warned of a nationwide agitation, including “Jantar Mantar 2.0”, if he does not step down within two days. “To ensure free and fair elections, CEC Gyanesh Kumar must resign,” CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said.

The Supreme Court Collegium has approved the appointment of 12 additional judges as permanent judges in the high courts of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Uttarakhand and Gauhati. The collegium, comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Vikram Nath and B.V. Nagarathna, decided at a meeting held on Wednesday (September 23, 2026). Five additional judges have been approved for permanent appointment to the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

BJP spent more in Bengal than Congress did across five state polls: EC filings

The BJP spent ₹286.99 crore on the West Bengal elections alone, more than the ₹248.55 crore the Congress spent across four States and a Union territory that went to polls earlier this year, according to expenditure statements filed with the Election Commission.

Bengal accounted for more than half of the BJP’s ₹529.38-crore expenditure on the five elections, the other four being in Assam, Keralam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The party spent ₹217.16 crore on general campaigning in Bengal and ₹69.83 crore on candidates.

Noida bus fire: passengers warned driver of burning smell; 17 challans worth ₹1.59 lakh pending against vehicle

Passengers of the ill-fated bus that caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway early on Thursday, killing nine people, had alerted the driver and conductor about a burning smell but were talked down by the duo, who were also smoking inside the vehicle, said an FIR filed by a survivor from Hamirpur district. The bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway, 5km from the newly inaugurated Noida International Airport. The driver refused to stop when the fire started and allegedly told the passengers, “If you want to die, then die; we won’t stop the bus.”
