Brazilian Supreme Court panels sentences Bolsonaro to more than 27 years in prison for coup attempt
A panel of Brazilian Supreme Court justices sentenced former president Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison Thursday (September 11, 2025) after convicting him of attempting a coup to remain in office despite his 2022 electoral defeat. Bolsonaro is currently under house arrest in Brasilia. He can appeal the sentence. Four of the five justices reviewing the case in the panel found the far-right politician guilty on five counts.
Vice-President-elect Radhakrishnan to take oath on September 11
Vice-President-elect C P Radhakrishnan will be administered the oath of office by President Droupadi Murmu on Friday, officials said. Former Maharashtra Governor Radhakrishanan will be sworn in as the next VP at a ceremony scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, they said.
Nepal protests: Death toll rises to 34, Supreme Court to partially resume from September 14
The death toll from Nepal’s recent protests has climbed to 34, a government agency said on Thursday (September 11, 2025). The Ministry of Health and Population, in its latest update, said that 34 people have died, while 1,368 are receiving treatment at various hospitals. The Supreme Court of Nepal has said it will begin accepting and hearing habeas corpus petitions starting Sunday (September 14, 2025). In a statement issued on Thursday (September 11, 2025), Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut said, “We wish to inform the public that, as per the decision of an emergency meeting of the full bench of the Supreme Court today, the registration and hearing of habeas corpus petitions will commence from Sunday.”

President Droupadi Murmu appointed Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat to discharge functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties, as incumbent Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan demitted office on Thursday (September 11, 2025) due to his election as the country’s next Vice President. Mr. Radhakrishnan, the 67-year-old NDA nominee, won the vice presidential election on Tuesday, defeating the joint opposition nominee B Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes.
Fadnavis slams Karnataka CM over renaming of Bengaluru Metro station
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, in Mumbai, on Thursday (September 11, 2025) hit out at his Karnataka counterpart K. Siddaramaiah for the proposal to rename the Shivaji Nagar Metro Station in Bengaluru as St. Mary station. Central Committee member among 10 Maoists killed in Gariyaband
Ten Maoists, including Manoj alias Modem Balakrishna, a central committee member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist), were killed by security forces during an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Gariyaband district on Thursday (September 11, 2025). Manoj carried a bounty of ₹1 crore, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said.

PILs in Bombay High Court challenge Maratha-Kunbi certificate order
A set of Public Interest Litigations (PILs) has been filed in the Bombay High Court challenging the Maharashtra government’s September 2, 2025, Government Resolution (GR) that allows members of the Maratha community to obtain Kunbi caste certificates and avail reservation under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad on Wednesday directed Mangesh Sasane, chairperson of the OBC Welfare Foundation, to move an interim application if he wished to amend his pending PIL to include a challenge to the September 2 notification. The matter is likely to be heard next week.

Mr. Mandelson’s departure was announced on Friday, just days before U.S. President Donald Trump’s State visit to the U.K. “In light of the additional information in emails written by Peter Mandelson, the Prime Minister has asked the Foreign Secretary to withdraw him as Ambassador. The emails show that the depth and extent of Peter Mandelson’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein is materially different from that known at the time of his appointment,” the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said in a statement.
