World Diabetes Day 2021 – November 14

United Nations (UN) World Diabetes Day is celebrated annually on 14th November, to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue and effective responsibility to be undertaken collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition with the theme ‘Access to Diabetes Care’ for 2021-2023.

• 2021 celebrates the 100th year of insulin discovery and highlights the huge gap between the people who need access to insulin to control their diabetes along with essential technologies such as blood glucose meters and test strips.
• On January 23, 1922, Leonard Thompson (14-year-old ) became the first person to receive an insulin injection as treatment for diabetes

Children’s Day 2021 – November 14

In India, Children’s Day or Bal Diwas is annually celebrated on 14th November, the birth anniversary of India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad, British India.

The day also recognises Jawaharlal Nehru’s efforts and works for the welfare, education and development of children and young people.
• The Children’s Day 2021 marks the 132nd birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru who is fondly known as “Chacha Nehru”.

Background:
i.Since 1954, the United Nations(UN) has been observing the 20th November of every year as World Children’s Day also known as Universal Children’s Day.
ii.In 1964, following the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Parliament of India passed the resolution to observe the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, 14th November as Children’s day in India.

1st Janjatiya Gaurav Divas – 15th November 2021

India observed the first ever Janjatiya Gaurav Divas (Tribal Pride Day) on 15th November 2021. The day marks the birth anniversary of Amar Shaheed Bhagwan Birsa Munda (Birsa Munda), a tribal leader who fought against British rule in India.

• The day also recognises the contribution of the tribal community who were a part of the freedom struggle and their efforts to preserve their cultural heritage.
Several events and programmes will be organised from November 15 to 22 as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to pay respect to the tribal freedom fighters.

Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas Mahasammelan:

Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi visited Madhya Pradesh(MP) to participate in Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas Mahasammelan held at Jamburi Maidan, Bhopal, MP as a part of the Janjatiya Gaurav Divas.

Highlights:

i.PM launched the ‘Ration Aapke Gram’ scheme in MP with an aim to deliver the monthly quota of Public Distribution System (PDS) Ration to beneficiaries from Janjatiya community in their own villages.
ii.Marking the launch of the Madhya Pradesh Sickle Cell (Hemoglobinopathy) Mission, he handed over the hand over genetic counselling cards to beneficiaries.
The mission aims to screen and manage patients suffering from sickle cell anaemia, Thalassemia and other Hemoglobinopathies and create awareness about these diseases.
iii.He also laid the foundation stone of 50 Eklavya Model Residential Schools across India in states and union territories (UT) including Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Tripura and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu.
iv.PM Modi has also virtually inaugurated Bhagwan Birsa Munda Memorial Udyan cum Freedom Fighter Museum

This museum will feature the tribal culture full of diversity, depicting the contribution of tribal heroes and heroines in the freedom struggle.

PM Inaugurated Bhopal’s Habibganj Railway Station Renamed After Rani Kamlapati:

On the occasion of 1st Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, PM Modi inaugurated the redeveloped Rani Kamlapati Railway Station, Bhopal, MP. The Habibganj railway station was renamed after Rani Kamlapati, the first Gond queen of Bhopal.

i.Rani Kamlapati railway station, a part of the West Central Railway, is India’s first ISO certified Railway Station.
ii.This is also India’s first PPP (Public-Private partnership) model-based railway station that has been dedicated to the nation.

The renaming honours the memory and sacrifices made by a queen of the Gond community.
• Rani Kamlapati was hailed as the pride of the Gond community and the last Hindu queen of Bhopal, the kingdom was later seized by Afghan commander Dost Mohammed by deceit.

India’s first grass conservatory developed in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand

On November 15, 2021, India’s first ‘grass conservatory’ or ‘germplasm conservation centre’ spread over an area of 2 acres was inaugurated at Ranikhet in Almora district of Uttarakhand.

• This conservatory is funded under the Central Government’s CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) scheme and is developed by the research wing of Uttarakhand Forest Department.

Aim behind Grass Conservatory:
To create awareness about the importance of grass species, promote their conservation, and facilitate research in the field, Need behind Grass Conservatory: Grasslands are facing various types of threats and their area is shrinking resulting in endangering the entire ecosystem of insects, birds, and mammals dependent on them. In order to cope up with this degradation, this conservatory has been developed.

Gen. Bipin Rawat inaugurates 14th edition of Cyber Security Conference ‘c0c0n’

The 14th edition of Cyber Security ‘c0c0n’, an annual Hacking and Cyber Security Conference, was inaugurated by Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat and conducted in virtual format from November 10-13, 2021. Theme for cOcOn 2021 – ‘Improvise, Adapt and Overcome’.

• The conference was conducted by the Kerala police in association with two Non-Profit organisations, Society for the Policing of Cyberspace (POLCYB) and Information Security Research Association (ISRA).

Objective: To discuss at the international level the challenges facing the digital world during the COVID period and the solutions needed to overcome them

Mahela Jayawardene, Shaun Pollock, Janette Brittin Inducted to ICC Hall Of Fame

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced cricket legends Janette Brittin (England), Shaun Pollock (South Africa) and Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) as new inductees to ‘ICC Hall of Fame’.

Key Highlights:
i.Former England cricketer Janette Brittin, who passed away in 2017, has played 27 Tests and 63 ODIs for England between 1979 and 1998.
• She holds the record for scoring Most 50’s in Women’s Test Cricket (11)
ii.Jayawardena retired as one of Sri Lanka’s greatest ever players, a key member of the team that won the T20 World Cup in 2014 and reached four other major ICC finals.
• He also scored over 10,000 runs in both Tests and ODIs (One Day Internationals)
iii.Pollock was one of the finest bowling all-rounders and the first player to achieve the 3,000 run and 300 wicket double in both Test and ODI cricket.

Australia Wins its Maiden ICC T20 World Cup

On 14th November 2021, Australia defeated New Zealand in the finals of 2021 International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup tournament that was held at Dubai International Stadium, UAE, to win its maiden T20 world cup.

i.Mitchell Marsh recorded the fastest fifty in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final’s history, by reaching the 50-runs mark in just 31 balls.
ii.New Zealand failed to win the tournament despite posting 172 runs on board, the highest ever score in ICC T20 world cup finals.

• Player of the Match – Mitchell Marsh (Australia) for his 77-run knock in the finals
• Player of the Tournament – David Warner (Australia) for his match winning contribution throughout the tournament

Padma Vibhushan awardee ‘Babasaheb Purandare’ passed away in Pune

In November 2021,Renowned historian and Padma Vibhushan recipient Balwant Moreshwar Purandare passed away due to pneumonia in Pune, Maharashtra at the age of 99 years. He is also popularly known as Babasaheb Purandare.

About Balwant Moreshwar Purandare:
i.Babasaheb Purandare was born on July 29, 1922 Pune, Maharashtra. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan award in 2019, India’s second-highest civilian award, in the field of ‘Art’.
ii.He is a famous Marathi writer, known for his popular historic Marathi book “Raja Shivchhatrapati”, which was published in the 1950s. For this he was known as ‘Shiv Shahir’.
iii.Purandare also conceived and directed the theatrical history on Shivaji Maharaj’s life titled ‘Jaanta Raja’ in the mid-1980s.
