The European Union has awarded 75 Indian students the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) scholarship for the 2026–2028 academic cycle, reinforcing India’s position as the top recipient of this award since 2004 and placing it among the top three countries globally in this year’s intake. India currently has close to one lakh students pursuing higher education across Europe.

Scholarships Granted:

New Initiative:
Launch of the EU India Student Ambassadors’ Network with 40 ambassadors from 20 universities across 14 states/UTs.
Purpose: Promote European academic opportunities and strengthen youth ties between India and Europe.
Fields of Study:
Students will study in 15 European countries including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.
Programmes span cybersecurity, AI, smart urban development, renewable energy, vaccinology, gender studies, humanities, and social sciences.
Gender balance continues to be strong among recipients.
Ambassador’s Message:
EU Ambassador Hervé Delphin called the scholars “agents of change”, highlighting their role in building deeper knowledge links between regions.
Institutions Represented:
Scholars hail from IIT Madras, IIT Bombay, IISc, JNU, Delhi University, Mumbai University, plus regional universities like Panjab University and Gauhati University.
Long Term Impact:
Since 2004: 7,500+ scholarships and 2,500+ joint master’s degrees awarded to Indians.
Erasmus+ also supports Capacity Building projects (16 since 2021) and Jean Monnet Action projects (17 recognising Indian academics in European Studies).
