| Selection
Process in MBA Schools (In India) |
Selection
in MBA schools is based on the candidate's
performance in written test, Group Discussion
and interview.
The entire selection procedure is divided in two stages.
- Written Test (Objective Test)
- Group
discussion and personal interview
(Having
crossed the written test hurdle, you will recieve a call for group discussion
and personal interview. After you clear both the stages of the selection
process, you will be sent a letter of admission or final call for admission
in to the institute.) |
| |
|
| The
following sections are generally included in
an M.B.A. written test. |
- Verbal
Ability and comprehension in the English
Language
- Mathematical
/ Quantitative Ability or Problem solving
- Data
Interpretation
- Reasoning
- General

English
being the communication link in the corporate
sector demands a very good command over the
language. Hence the institute conducting MBA
courses like to ensure that the applicants
have sufficient control over the usage pattern
and the comprehension of English. Every entrance
exam for admission in to an MBA programme has
a compulsory section of English which seeks
to evaluate vocabulary, grammar and comprehension.
Vocabulary is the foundation of language, candidates
are expected to have a wide-ranging stock.
The exact meaning of a word, its uses and meaning
in different contexts, the word opposite to
it in meaning, words sounding similar to it
and their meaning-these are the ways to start
building up a powerful vocabulary. Testing
of vocabulary test is done through synonyms,
antonyms, word substitution, completion of
sentences with the appropriate words, analogies
(relationship between a given pair of words),
etc..
The next important aspect of the English section is grammar. A thorough working
knowledge of the rules of grammar, that is to say, knowledge of the application
of the rules of grammar in English, are needed to handle questions such as -
fill in the blanks with right prepositions, verbs (tenses), articles, conjunctions,
correction of sentences or spotting errors.
A very important aspect of English testing is the comprehension exercise. To
be able to handle the comprehension passage effectively a candidate should have
a very good knowledge of all aspects - words (their meanings, uses) and grammar.
Not only that should you be able to read fast, assimilate the contents, but you
should also be able to mark out own choices without going to and from the passage
and the questions constantly.
By and large a good command of the language coupled with constant and adequate
practice can ensure success. |

In
order to keep abreast and understand the implications
of corporate activity a great degree of mathematical
ability is required. The working of business
has to be analysed in numerical terms and so
we find that mathematical aptitude testing
is also a major thrust area of the MBA entrance
exams.
This section requires knowledge of the application
of different areas of Mathematics - Airthmatic
(mensuration, profit and loss, simple and
compound interest, time
and work, time and distance, ratio and proportion), Algebra (linear equations,
factorisation, quadratic equations, progression, permutation & combination,
etc.), Trigonometry (trigonometrical ratios and identities, heights and distance),
Statistic (probability).
All the areas tested in this mathematical aptitude section have been studied
by all the applicants as they are the topics taught in great detail over the
year in school from classes 6 to 10. The effort needed for this section is to
recapture that familiarity and polish it up so that reaction time for each question
isn't more than 25-30 seconds. |

| Data
Interpretation / Data Sufficiency |
|
Dealing
with different types of data is part and
parcle of every business activity. Before
admitting students into the MBA programme
institute prefer to test whether you have
an aptitude for analysing data . This section
has question which require the interpretation
and analysis of the data table, or diagrammatic
representation of data, graph and Venn diagrams.
There may be questions which need to be analysed
from the point of view of relevance and adequecy
of the data provided. For this section you
require a good head for figures and reasoning
and analytical abilities. The right approach
which comes from sufficient
practice makes this section easy to handle. |
| |
|
|
This
section has questions, which test the analytical
ability of students. In most of the exams
except CET Maharashtra the form of reasoning
is verbal only. |
| |
|
|
A
few institutes also include a section with
questions on General Knowledge. Good General
awarness of your surroundings, culture and
heritage, and happenings on the national scenes
will see you through. A well-informed person
is what they are looking for.
Most of the average intelligence have the above abilities present in them. What
is important for getting selected is the hard work and dedication that a candidate
has put in to gain mastery over the different section of the entrance test. |

The
group discussion exersises is conducted to
check your leadership, analytical and cooprative
skills. A topic for discussion is provided
and the group has to search a consensus taking
its pros & cons, with in a stipulated
time period.
Determining Factors in Group Discussion : Capabilities
to influence, Power to express, No rigidity in
opinions, Self confidance, Understanding
of the subjects, Healthy
attitude, Lively in conduct & Partcipation. |
| |
|
|
The
personal interviews are conducted to check
the students confidence level as well as the
personality as a whole. Refined general awareness,
academics and self evaluation are the key to
success. |
